Mail Me Art: Short and Sweet

Mail Me Art is an international project where selected artists paint/ink/collage/create artwork on the outside of an envelope and mail it. There's nothing inside the envelope, it's just about creating a fun decorated piece and letting whatever happen to it happen as it travels the world.

The project creator Darren Di Lieto, based in the United Kingdom, collects all the mailed envelopes and has an art exhibit displaying the envelopes and publishes a book of the works. This is the 3rd installment of the project, you may have seen the previous projects published at your bookshop called Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the Worlds Best Illustrators and Designers.

This edition of Mail Me Art is called "Short and Sweet" and limited to 200 artists, and I was happy to be chosen to participate! Here is my envelope featuring a little rabbit in his rabbit home. The envelope surface absorbed my paint a little different so it was a challenge to work on a new material.

Below is the scanned envelope after it had been through the mail - traveling from Nebraska to the United Kingdom.  I've seen incredibly creased, ripped, and mauled envelopes before, so I didn't think it looked to shabby, especially for international mail!

Mail is a great way for people to connect to each other, and check out Mail Me Art's website for past projects and updates. So far there are plans for an exhibit in London and I'll be posting more about the exhibit dates when they become available.

Not in Kansas Anymore - Gallery Nucleus Tribute Show

Next weekend is the opening to the Wizard of Oz tribute show "Not in Kansas Anymore" at Gallery Nucleus. 50 artists translate the captivating series, movies and many incarnations of the wonderful series.

I was only familiar with the 1939 film featuring Judy Garland and spin offs like Wicked, so I thought it was about time I read the original book by L. Frank Baum. I really loved the book, and am working my way through the rest of the 15 book series that Baum created.

My love of gems mixed with the fascinating emerald city described in the book is what led to the creation of my painting for the show.

I had to laugh when I found out that the great and powerful Oz (seen flying away in his air balloon in my painting) was just a dude from Omaha, which is the capital of Nebraska (where I live!). Nebraska rarely gets a mention in art and literature so I'm always surprised and happy when something pops up.

If you are interested in getting an early preview of the show, sign up for the online preview at Gallery Nucleus here. The reception is Saturday, March 16th and there will be lots of fun events such as live songs by broadway singers in Wicked, crystal ball readings, and requesting a wish made by the all powerful oz!

Harvest Moon : Follow-up Desert Bus Painting

Back in November I participated in Desert Bus for Hope charity event (here is my complete blog post about the event) where lots of items are bid on while the hosts play the video game Desert Bus. One of the items I contributed for the auctions, was a custom painting based on a video game of the winning bidders choosing. It's been a little time since the event, but here is the completed painting based on Harvest Moon for 64. The client really liked the farming aspect of the game and I thought all the animals and characters in the video game were adorable, so I worked out a composite highlighting some of the main aspects the game.

For those of you who have played the game you might recognize Karen who is one of the lovely females of the game your character can "woo". I didn't realize that they're were lots of Harvest Moon games in the series still being made, they really interesting and made me want a DS!
