This July marks a year of many "firsts" for me. One year ago I decided to commit to my painting full time. It was a goal I had been working towards, but always held picture framing, teaching or design work on the side. But when the frame shop that I had been working at closed, it was the little push I needed to decide to be full time freelancer. It's a scary plunge, paychecks from projects come at somewhat erratic schedules, but something that I had been preparing for. And it's something that I could not have done without YOU.
And who are YOU? You are the patrons who commission projects, the gallery owners who saw value in showing my artwork, the artists who I bounce idea's off of and call my friends, teachers who expanded my world view, the parents who saw a daughter who loved to draw, the sisters that have shown up for my shows and done my crazy taxes, the husband who has seen the good paintings in progress on my desk and the terrible ones torn up in the trashcan--and supported me through it all. Being an artist has connected me with people in a way that I never anticipated, and its awesome.
What else happened in the span of one year?
- Moved from Nebraska to Washington
- Bought our first house!
- Then moved again to settle into our house.
- Painted well over a hundred paintings (I didn't want to count the exact number)
- My online Etsy shop hit 500 sales since opening in 2008.
- Joined a weekly Dungeons and Dragons group started by my guy. (Best night of the week!)
It's a bit of a more personal blog post than I usually do, but creating artwork is personal. It's an exciting adventure, and adventures are best taken with others.
