I have two contributions to the show, the first one based on Little Red Riding Hood, but I wanted her more of an adventuring rogue instead of a little girl. My other painting features a gnarly old tree that produces all these poisoned apples that are fed to the fair maidens. It looks like some soul has met their end there!

I will be there tonight for a little bit after 6:00 and I'm looking forward to what everyone has created.

Happy Holiday's

Been a busy last few weeks...finishing commissions, wrapping presents...then unwrapping presents! Here are a few photo highlights of my holiday festivities (and yes I finally got an iphone and got on the instragram photo bandwagon!).

Every nerd needs a 8-bit wreath to add that geeky cheer. (Available at Thinkgeek if you need to add to your 8bit collection)

These are adorable mini sweaters my mom-in-law knit my guy and I for our x-mas tree. Modeled after the sweaters Ron's mom made Harry and Ron every winter, these are just so awesome we will probally keep them out all year round!

My family started out Christmas-eve with a gigantic appetizer spread. Part of said spread was a great cheese tray with lots of fun cheesy delights.

Mr Toshi here posing beautifully as he get's fed his favorite treat...banana chips!

It's a tradition here at our house that whenever you leave your seat there will soon be a cat to take your spot. Here Kit and Mochi both went for my desk chair. Notice how they are both avoiding eye contact with me...thinking that if they don't see me they won't have to move it!

Here is a little sneak peek of what I am currently working on in the studio. This February at the Lux Center in Lincoln, I will be having a show featuring 50 of these mini paintings and other goodies. These little works are glimpses into the lives of the woodland inhabitants. Many tea parties and adventures to be had in the Woodland Shade!

Etching Process & Sale!

I finally got all my etchings listed in my online shop and now at a reduced price.
They are listed at 50% their original price!  Check out all my available etchings here.

.......................................................................................

Each print is made from etched copper, inked by hand and then run through a printing press. It is a labor intensive process but I love this old school way of printing.

I first learned the method in college and then did a printmaking residency here at the Lux Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska. I wish I had better progress photos, but I do have a few photos to help explain the printing (making the plate itself is a whole other ball game which involves a waxy ground, needle to draw your image, solution to etch the image, and then aquatint techniques to achive the different value ranges.)

Here I am hand inking a little plate. Basically ink is applied and rubbed into the little groves of plate. Then the surface is wiped clean so the only ink left is in the etched lines I wish to print.

Then the plate is placed on the press bed, a damp piece of printmaking paper is placed over the copper plate, and then blankets are put over the top. Then the whole thing is run through the press, applying pressure to the paper so that it picks up the ink in the grooves of the plate.

Avard's Mysterious Selection, 3 x 4 inches, Etching & Aquatint, © Nicole Gustafsson 2008

The final result is an image with different values achieved though one ink pass. If you wanted a multi-colored print you would need another plate for each color you wanted. This is a traditional method for having multiple copy's of the same image. If you wanted a 1000 images of a picture you would have to go though inking, wiping, and printing each time (hence why I keep my edition numbers low)!

If I do any more etchings I'll be sure to take better photos of the process, but that's the basic idea!

Here is a print I have been working on the last couple days. This piece was commissioned by the Lux Center for the Arts in Lincoln, NE.

The mission of Lux Center for the Arts is to enhance the lives of a diverse public through the visual arts by providing exceptional learning opportunities in contemporary art, craft, and design. Coming up this September they are having "A deLUX Art Gala" benefit dinner and art auction. Every person who attends this event will receive one of this prints! I printed these on handmade paper (variety of colors - light blue, cream, sparkle, white!) by my favorite paper place, Porridge Papers.

Warren

Warren, 6"x8", Etching & Aquatint, 2009.

An etching from my upcoming show "Wanderfrost" at the Lux Center for the arts. I've always been fascinated with bonsai techniques of binding plants to shape them into a certain forms or directions. Here the rabbits have been forming the tree for some unknown reason, but have kept about it quite diligently...

Show opens this Friday, May 1st, with a gallery reception from 5:00 - 7:00pm.

Coming up soon is a Gouache Class at the Lux Center for the Arts. It's a six week painting class for adults starting Sept. 8th-Oct13th from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. If you are interested in taking this class contact the Lux Center to sign up!

Nicole Gustafsson
Bonsai Shop, Acryla Gouache & Ink, 2007.

Acryla Gouache can be painted opaque or transparent which lends itself well with layering color and creating depth. I had been using watercolors for several years and finally gave this medium a try and loved it.

Note: I highly recommend using Holbein Acryla Gouache, because it doesn't crack, lift up previous color layers, or have any other issues that I've experienced with some other brands/types of gouache.
