Solo show premiering at Gallery 1988 (East)

It's been a bit quiet on my blog these last few months, but I've been hard at work preparing for a new solo exhibit at Gallery 1988 (East). The Once And Future Weird Kids opens at Gallery 1988 THIS FRIDAY from 7-9 pm in LA. This show features all new paintings and prints I've created for this pop culture themed exhibit. 

I will be there in attendance at the reception this Friday. The entire show will be online Saturday, Jan 10th, and viewable in person from Jan 8th  -  Jan 23rd. Here is a painting featuring the Goonies! This piece in particular is close to my heart because I frequently visit Cannon Beach in Oregon, which features the Haystack Rock in the background when the pirate ship comes from the cave. Love that whole area, and what is better than a good treasure hunt to boot!

Postcard Correspondence opens at Gallery 1988 tonight!

Tonight is the opening to "Postcard Correspondence" at Gallery 1988 (West). Over 100 artists create postcard sized pieces to share their favorite pop culture locations and adventures. Just from the few sneak peeks I've seen online, I really love what artists have chosen to depict in their pieces.

I love making smaller sized artwork so this show is right up my alley. I had been wanting to paint the iconic dog cafe in the film "Rocketeer" for a long time, so that is what I choose for the subject of my piece.

Pop Terrariums at Gallery 1988

The opening to "Pop Terrariums", my solo show at Gallery 1988 was last weekend and I had a blast there in LA! Finally got to meet some art buddies in person, and great to see both new and familiar faces too. Want to give a huge THANK YOU to Gallery 1988 - Katie, Jensen, Amber, John you folks are awesome and always happy to part of your shows.

The show is now online at www.Gallery1988.com, and is available for viewing in person through the month of January. There are some originals still left and the gallery and I teamed up to make several prints available at the opening. We will be adding the Beetlejuice and Karate Kid print available at the closing of the show too. *I just want to mention here that get a lot of requests for additional prints for other paintings too, and it's just not possible to make prints of every painting I do. The gallery and I try to select a good variety and balance of prints.*

10 Year Anniversary Show - Gallery 1988

Tonight marks the 10 Year Anniversary Show "The Subtle Art of Pop Culture" at Gallery 1988. I first started showing at Gallery 1988 in 2009 at the encouragement of a friend to contact them. (The first show I participated in was a He-Man tribute show!). Many years later I am thrilled to continue to create works for their shows. Thank you co-owners Katie and Jensen and crew for an awesome time!

For my contribution to the show, I wanted to do a little ode to one of my favorite movies "Waterworld". I remember seeing the movie on TV at one point growing up and I was just in love with the whole theme of the film.

Crazy4Cult NYC: Tonight!

Tonight in New York City is the latest installment of Gallery 1988's Crazy4Cult art show. I've been participating in this show for three years and happy to be part of the group show again. This time around I picked one of my favorite films: The Neverending Story.

There were many parts of this movie that absolutely fascinated me, like Falcore the luck dragon and the giant rock eating guy, but terrified me like the Sphinxes and the horse dying in the muddy swamp. But everything turned out ok and I love watching this movie.

If you are in NYC today go check it out! There are over 200 works in this show and a great show for the movie fanatics and art fans alike. The entire show usually goes online a day or two after the opening. 

Shaun of the Dead print release this Friday at Gallery 1988

Crazy4Cult: Say Hi To The Bad Guy at Gallery1988

Last Friday was the opening to the latest Crazy 4 Cult at Gallery 1988, this time featuring the bad guys you love to hate. For my piece I wanted to do an ode to Hocus Pocus and focus on the those effected by the witches curse.

I usually like very simple frames, but for this one I wanted a older, spooky looking frame for one of my favorite Halloween movies.

We Made Them Do It - New show at Gallery 1988 West

Opening tonight 7-10pm is the "We Made Them Do It" show at Gallery 1988 West. Prints and original works based on the tv shows and movies that you thought would never see in an art show. The weird, the underdogs, the so-bad-it-wasn't-even-cult-worthy. Here is a post that co-owner Jensen posted about the show.

My piece is based on the movie "Nothing But Trouble". I first watched the movie because I'm a huge Chevy Chase fan, but this movie takes so many weird turns I was very weirded out. If you've watched the movie I think you'll get what I mean, and if you haven't watched the movie, well, I'm not sure you would want to. In fact it's a hard movie to get ahold of other than the internet. However there are lots of great actors involved and even an appearance by the music group Digital Underground!

Gallery1988 - Crazy 4 Cult NYC!

This Thursday is the opening to Gallery 1988 Crazy 4 Cult exhibit at NYC! Yup usually the show is hosted at their gallery in LA, but this year they decided to mix it up and show the exhibit on the east coast in NYC. Here's the details:

With this show I always have a hard time narrowing it down to a movie to pay homage to, but I've been in love with the Monty Python folks for a while (particularly their Flying Circus tv series). From the silly walks, to memorable quotes this group of actors are awesome. So I decided to create a painting based on their characters from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Finding a holy grail is hard work and I thought they would have a little party to celebrate after the quest was completed.

Meme show at Gallery 1988!

Tonight is the opening of the Meme themed show at Gallery 1988! 100 artists pay tribute to their favorite internet sensations. There's so many glorious memes floating the interwebs that it was hard to decide on what to contribute to the show. In the end it came down to two individuals who just don't care....Honey Badger and Leeroy Jenkins.

Here they are all organized for signing. I am a paper snob and super picky which is why I don't do a lot of prints, they are hard to get right sometimes. But I was just blown away by the print quality on these (printed by the fine folks at Gallery1988), they look so rich and detailed that I couldn't be more happy with how they turned out.
